As my tipple of choice, I’m all for the recent revival of gin and love seeing it take pride of place on cocktail menus and supermarket shelves. Last week whilst down in Brighton I stumbled across The Gin Tub, an eclectic looking bar on Church Road. With it being past midday, and having just made a decision on my new apartment, it felt like the right place to stop and have a celebratory drink (or 4).
With eccentric and vibrant decoration and a beautifully adorned bar, I knew immediately that this was my kind of watering hole. We were shown to a table with an old-fashioned phone as a centrepiece. The waitress explained that this was how we would communicate with the bar, to ask for information on the drinks or place an order. We could even dial other tables, a feature I think could be very dangerous on a Friday night after a bit of Dutch courage.
With so much to choose from and many gins I had never heard of before we decided to try the Gin Sliders, a board of 4 small 15ml gins each paired with their perfect garnish and a little bottle of tonic. Watching the barman at work was like watching a magician and this showed in the final product. Due to the low lighting, the pictures do not do the delicate garnishes justice but each thin balloon glass was decorated with ingredients that complimented their contents, from lavender and juniper berries to lime and coriander. Just a twist of lime or shard of dried apple could really change the flavour profile.
More than just a bar The Gin Tub is an experience. Later that same night I came back with a friend to sample a little more from the menu, it was a fantastic night, with great service and even better gins. Prices vary from the very reasonable to quite obscene depending on the quality and rarity of the gin. One to visit if you’re this end of Brighton and in the mood for gin!
