Ok, I’ll admit it, I used to be a bit judgemental of Primark. Obviously, it was all awful quality, trashy and so not my style, but over the years I’ve developed a new appreciation for the brand and have found some amazing pieces of clothing, jewellery and homeware that have lasted the test of time, and gained me a few compliments. Of course, for every hit, there’s also a miss in Primark, but it’s not too difficult to filter out what’s a bargain and what’s a waste of money when you really look carefully.
So here’s a selection of the things that I picked up from Primark last week, and a guest appearance from Tiger too.
The first thing that immediately caught my attention was the bedding. Having just moved into my own place I’m starting to develop my own style, and a great way to change the feel of your bedroom is by changing your bedding. After all the bed is the centre piece. I’ve been leaning a lot toward aqua blue recently and so decided to overhaul my bed with this new duvet set, some new pillow cases and fitted sheet. For £10 this duvet set felt like a real steal, I also own the marble bed set from Primark and despite it being easy on the purse it’s still soft against the skin and has washed really well. Unless you’re one to watch the thread count then Primark’s bedding is a winner. The sheet, extra pillow cases and bed set came to a total of £14.
Anyone who’s close to me knows that I’m a nester, and by that, I mean that I like a ridiculous amount of pillows and an even bigger selection of throws, which all end up in a nest like shape around me when I sleep. I’ve been on the look out for a new throw for ages, but the price has never been right. This was a bargain, and best of all it’s massive. The super soft fleece like material feels like velvet, the colour is striking and reminds me of the sea in Mexico. It swamps my double bed and feels so luxurious. I’m heading back to Primark next pay day to explore their other colour options, just make sure to go for the extra large if like me you want an extra snuggly feeling.
Another homeware item that I always pick up from Primark is candles. I love the relaxing glow of candlelight and like to dot tea lights around my house to give a warm and hygge feel. For £1 a packet they’re a real bargain and smell pretty good too. If you’re willing to spend a little more Primark also has a great offering of larger candles, this 3 wick sea-salt and lavender candle came in a beautiful marble tin and was only £3! Not only does it look great on my bookshelf but it’s relaxing lavender scent fills the room within minutes of being lit.
In the same way that changing your bedding can completely change the look and feel of your bedroom, your bath mats can do the same for your bathroom. When we moved into our new apartment our hideous black and white lino bathroom floor came with two stained white mats. It wasn’t a pretty sight. Primark does a great selection of homeware for the bathroom; from shower curtains to towels, to bath mats. We spent a little more and got the ‘chenille’ material which literally translates to ‘caterpillar’. Although only one is pictured we got two, which covers a good portion of our bathroom floor. These mats are so so soft and the little caterpillars give your toes a hug every time you step on them and add texture to what was previously a very dreary part of our home. The grey and white work perfectly with our more neutral bathroom colour scheme, and I have to be honest, if Primark did this in a bigger rug format I would have one in my bedroom.
I picked up my final bits of homeware from Tiger, which were perhaps the biggest bargain of the day. I have a little obsession with cacti but was sick of mine sitting in ugly brown plastic pots. I’ve been on the look out for pretty plant pots for some time but either they’ve been too expensive, or just plastic and tacky. When I saw these in Tiger I thought they’d be at least £4 a piece. They’re thick ceramic, painted nd glazed but to my surprise, they were only £1! My little cacti are so grateful for their upgrade and my only regret is that I didn’t pick up a few more!
