It’s starting to get pretty chilly, which for me is the cue to get excited for Christmas! However, for anyone who doesn’t like the cold weather, it’s the beginning of a long and dark period of the year. A bit of winter sun could be exactly what the doctor ordered, whether you take a solo trip or go on a family holiday. For us Brits, Spain is one of the closest destinations to soak up that winter sun. It offers lots of beautiful destinations, just a short plane ride away, that are just that little bit warmer.
A personal favourite of mine, the capital of Spain is always a top choice for a city break. If you’re thinking of getting away for a weekend this winter, it’s an excellent option filled with fantastic shopping opportunities. Rich in culture and history, you can enjoy a quick couple of days there or extend your stay for a longer break. During the winter, you can enjoy the Christmas markets, and there are some exciting New Year’s celebrations too. You can easily find some great deals on trips to Madrid, especially if you bundle your flights and hotel together.
The Canary Islands
If you’re looking for somewhere a little warmer, the Canary Islands are ideal. Although they’re part of Spain, they’re located off West Africa so you can soak up even more sunshine. During the winter, you’ll get average temperatures of around 18 degrees Celsius, which is perfect T-shirt weather. If you fancy spending Christmas in Tenerife or maybe Fuerteventura, you can enjoy the beaches and the ocean. There are also some beautiful natural landscapes to explore, including the Volcan El Teide on Tenerife, one of the largest volcanoes in the world. Don’t worry, it hasn’t erupted for more than 100 years!
Costa Del Sol
As you can probably guess from the name, the Costa Del Sol is where you want to go for sunshine. It’s extremely popular during the summer but is still excellent as a destination for a winter holiday too. You’ll get average temperatures of around 17 degrees, and there are lovely beaches to enjoy. One thing that the region is well known for is its nightlife. If you want a trip where you can go to bars and clubs and generally enjoy yourself in the evenings, booking into a resort on the Costa Del Sol could be for you.
For something a little different, you could consider a cultural trip to Bilbao. While many other people might be going to Barcelona, Madrid or Seville, Bilbao is a great place for art and culture lovers. Located in Spain’s Basque region, it’s a little different from the rest of the country. You can find the modern Guggenheim Museum and the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum if you want to experience art through the ages.
If Spain tickles your fancy be sure to add it to your list as a winter sun-seeking getaway. Whether for a quick weekend away or a longer family holiday there’s a destination in Spain to suit everyone.
