What makes you feel good?
Is it freshly painted nails? Fresh bedding? A large glass of your favourite wine? Or a combination of all three?
The thing about what makes YOU feel good, is that it isn’t something I can teach you. I can’t tell you what makes you feel good, but I can tell you what makes ME feel good, and if you’re still finding out what it is that makes you feel like you’re taking care of you, then you’re more than welcome to try the things that make me feel like I’m the best thing in the world.
I try to have at least one self-care centred day a week, in fact, it might not even be the whole day, maybe just the afternoon. An afternoon is all I need to feel re-charged, pampered and loved by myself.
“The best project you’ll ever work on is you”
I walk through the door, my bra is thrown off like the uncomfortable prison that it is and I put on my most comfortable loungewear. Hair up, it’s topknot time. Contact lenses out and glasses on.
I pour myself a large glass of ice-cold Rose, what-ever was on offer at the local store is just fine, but this week the one with the cute cat label was half price, a little victory, I love saving money.
I light every candle I can find, and dot them around my flat, the soft glow makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside and reminds me of happy childhood memories nestled in front of our roaring fire. In a flat in central London, candles will have to do.
For some people, music would seem the next obvious port of call, but for me the silence is golden, it’s time to be away with my thoughts, to hear the wind outside and the sounds of the city.
I put on fresh bedsheets, something I’ll thank myself for later.
I run myself a bath, the hotter the better, and I put in a few hearty spoonfuls of my favourite bath soak. ‘Arbonne, Rescue and Renew’. “I could do with some of that,” I think to myself as I add an extra spoonful in.
As I swirl the beautiful pink salt crystals into the water the smell of pure, aromatic essential oils from grapefruit, tangerine, lavender, juniper berry, ginger, orange and rosemary rise up and fill the steamy bathroom air.
I make sure my wine glass is full and slip myself into the fragrant swirling water. If I have mental energy left to spare, I read a few lines of a book, but most of the time I just lay back, close my eyes, and take as long as I need to just think.
My candles flicker around me, the sensual steam rises up from the bath and clears my foggy head. I drink my cool wine and enjoy this moment of peace.
When I’m ready, often only when the bath water has gone cold, I step out and dry myself with my favourite tasselled towel.
Not wanting the beautiful essential oils to fade away I apply a generous amount of ‘Arbonne’s Rescue and Renew body lotion’ to my entire body. Taking the time to rub it in and massage my skin. Once again the air is filled with the most beautiful clean scent of essential oils which follows me around for the rest of the evening.
Back in my comfiest lounge-wear, I settle into my fresh bedding, wine glass re-filled I pile the pillows high around me, and pull my fluffy blanket up high. From here I either catch up my current Netflix series or turn some pages of my current book.
This hour, or two to myself each week just brings me back to myself. I feel ready for whatever life throws at me, I feel worthy and wholesome and since discovering the power of this time I feel so much more in control.
