  • One small change to completely change your morning

    Social media scrolling - wifi travel

    On January 1st I woke up and for the first time in forever, I didn’t reach for my phone. I’ve made three slightly alternative new years resolutions this year that you can read about here, but the one that has made the biggest impact on my lifestyle already is to stop morning scrolling.

    I had got into the very detrimental habit of waking up and before I had even fully opened my eyes, reaching for my phone and opening social media (Instagram being the worst). I’d watch every story, check my feeds and mindlessly scroll until it was actually time to get up. I love social media, don’t get me wrong, but this habit in the morning not only cost me precious time and left me rushed but also often put me in a negative headspace wherein before I had even given the day a chance I was judging my life against that of others and living in a virtual reality.

    As a digital marketer, I spend all day looking at screens, organising and cultivating the social media for my company. Some days I found that I would be staring at a screen from the moment I awoke until the moment I went to sleep, giving me headaches and causing to miss out on what was actually going on in the world.

    So I vowed that in 2018 I would make one small, simple, change and not reach for my phone in the morning. And wow what a difference it has made.

    Morning tea

    Now when I wake up I turn off my alarm and spend a few minutes enjoying the warm comforts of my bed. Then I make the short walk to the kettle and make a cup of ginger or green tea. Climbing back into my warm bed I now know I have at least half an hour of time entirely to myself. Time to be warm, enjoy my tea and do something for me. At the moment I’m reading in the mornings but I have plans to wake up half an hour earlier to read and then do a short yoga practice.

    When it finally reaches time to get up and get ready for work I find myself in a calm and organised headspace, feeling awake and ready to take on the day.

    I still find plenty of opportunities to enjoy social media throughout the day at times that are less important (such as the rush hour crush on the tube) but now I have reclaimed my mornings.

    Are you a morning scroller? Maybe it’s time to consider breaking the habit and taking back control of your time in the mornings.

      I am definitely guilty of being a morning scroller! But you’re right, maybe I should try to put a stop to it – comparing myself to perfectly curated Instagram feeds as a start to my day is probably not the best.
